Topic of the project:

“Unemployment is more than just a lack of income — it can affect a person’s self-worth, relationships within the family, mental health, and even their identity in society. But why does unemployment happen in the first place?”

Explore the deeper causes of unemployment—like lack of skills, automation, economic policies, or education gaps.

Then, think forward:

How does unemployment affect not just individuals, but entire families and communities?

What creative and practical steps can be taken by individuals, local communities, educational institutions, businesses, and governments to create meaningful and sustainable job opportunities for all?

Unemployment :

  • These days, new machines are being introduced constantly.
  • Since they can do the work of several workers in the same time, fewer workers are required.
  • Every time a new machine is introduced, many workers are fired from their jobs. Example: Printing press.
  • These machines could be worked on by even unskilled persons.
  • Thus, skilled people were no longer required.
  • Several people living in villages moved to towns and cities for work.
  • Today, we use many machines and machine-made goods in our day-to-day life.
  • To find a job is not a challenge in India, the problem is with the wages, etc.

The major impact on our country is by the lockdown announced on March 24.

However, the issue is wages. Someone might be getting wages of ₹15,000 but aspires a wage of ₹20,000.

Unemployment does not affect only individuals. It affects the whole family by the money. If a family does not have money, it cannot have enough life essentials like food, soap, etc. Self-worth: A significant drop in self-worth is strongly linked to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Identity in the society: A job provides a sense of self-identity, status, and purpose beyond a paycheck. Without that structure, unemployed individuals can feel shame and stress and also struggle to find new routines.

Unemployment Root Causes:

  • Education Gap: Many people in India are not going to schools and are losing education. A delay in someone’s formal education due to financial problems, personal problems, etc. This gap is commonly of one to two years.
  • Lack of Technical Skills: Also known as skill gap. It is the mismatch between the skills required for a job and those not owned by a person who wants to be employed. Like communication, etc.
  • Population: There is a lot of population in our country, but most of them have education gaps, lack of technical skills, etc. Due to this, the figure of unemployment is increasing.
  • Lower wagesThe workers cannot work with complete skills if they are not paid properly. They cannot satisfy their basic needs with meager wages. If their pays are increased, they can work for more time with enthusiasm. Thus, the increase in wages leads to an increase in employment.

Dependent on other countries : The countries should become independent. If India becomes self-independent, then we will not take any life essentials, machines, etc., from other countries. If this happens, then we would make everything in our country itself. For creating or making anything, we need many workers so that most of the people will be employed.

  • Fluctuating labor demands: If a laborer is working for 12 hours a day and asks to work 8 hours a day, and the owner does not allow it, then the work gets strained and one day he will leave his job.
  • Lack of advanced technology knowledge: Other countries have their own YouTube, Instagram, etc., but India does not have its own. Instead, we borrow from other countries, and they get millions of money from us if we use these apps.
  • Lack of Infrastructure in Rural Areas: In rural areas, there are no proper road facilities, water facilities, drainage facilities, etc. Because of this, people face problems going to their jobs, schools, etc.

Government Responsibility:

  • Building infrastructure in rural areas
  • Ensuring that everyone does not have an education gap
  • Ensuring that everyone gets appropriate wages according to their jobs
  • Ensuring that a country does not depend on other countries

Some Practical Steps to Decrease Unemployment:

  • Working hours should be fixed
  • Minimum wages should be appropriate
  • Insurance schemes should be launched
  • Holidays must be given to every worker or laborer
  • Workers or laborers should work only for 8 hours a day
  • They should be given appropriate time for lunch, break, etc.
  • The government should promote skill development
  • The government should give infrastructure support to rural and urban areas
  • Make sure that no one has an education gap
  • Any country should not depend on other countries

Surprise Findings:

  • Over 42% of Indian graduates under 25 are unemployed.
  • Even as the overall unemployment rate reduced to 6.6% in 2021–22 from 8.7% in 2017–18, over 42% of Indian graduates under 25 were unemployed in 2021–22.
  • After the coronavirus pandemic, 60% of women were self-employed compared to 50% before the pandemic.
  • Nagaland has the highest unemployment rate in India, according to the Ministry of Statistics.
  • The share of those with secondary or higher education among unemployed youth in India has almost doubled from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022.

  • The overall unemployment rate in Telangana was reported at 5.1% for those aged 15–59 in June 2023–July 2024, and 16.6% for the 15–29 age group.
  • James Watt was an English craftsman who invented machines. He noticed that steam had so much strength.
  • He showed his invention to an industrialist called Boulton, and the two entered into a partnership to make suchmachines.
  • Many changes took place during this period around 1450.
  • Machines and steam power began to be increasingly used to produce goods, to move goods or people from one place to another.
  • Boulton invested the necessary money and paid salary to James Watt. Watt made the steam engine. They made an agreement.
